Styling Guide

Same Color Tones/Palette

Stay in the same palette of colors. Select pastels, neutrals, or bright jewel tones, but don't mix up all three color concepts. In my personal opinion, neutral colors seem to photograph best, and seem to go well with any background.

Be Consistent

Coordinate-Don't Match

Coordinate your colors, but don't have everyone showing up matching exactly. Select a few colors that have the same color tones, and use that as your guide. It doesn't have to be exact or perfect!

Pick Something Comfortable

Pick something that makes you feel amazing when you put it on. Not a shirt or pants that you feel make any undesirable features you're not happy with stand out. The famous line "You can photoshop that out, right?" is a no. We are not magicians.

TIPS

HIGHLIGHT YOUR BEST ASSET

Tip from Chanel French: “Wearing something that highlights your best asset during your session will give you a boost of confidence throughout the shoot that will definitely show in your final images.”

NO TINY PRINTS OR STRIPES

When photographing in a digital format, small prints or stripes can easily get distorted and won't appear the same in camera. Stay away from printed patterns when possible.

NO LOGOS OR BRANDING

Stay away from clothing that has large logos-it can be distracting and take away from the moment.

USE THE COLOR WHEEL

Use the color wheel.
Tip from Leslie Crane: “I love using the color wheel when I help my clients decide what clothes will look good in our chosen photography location. Most of the time, I’ve scouted the location ahead of time so I have an idea how I want to use the spot and the colors available there. For my seniors who bring several different outfits, this can be really fun. There are many ways to use the color wheel when deciding what to wear for photos, but one way I love is to use complementary colors. For example, in the color wheel, yellow and purple are directly opposite from one another so are considered complementary. I can use those two colors (both in the location and my client’s attire) and I know my results will be beautiful!”
